How we earn money
Knowwatt is free to use. Every calculator, every guide, every city page — no paywall, no sign-up, no data harvesting. Here's how we keep it that way.
The short version
Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you click one and go on to buy a product or sign up to a service, we may earn a small commission from the provider. This costs you nothing extra — the price you pay is exactly the same whether you use our link or go directly to the provider's website.
We only link to products and services that are genuinely relevant to the content you're reading. We never recommend something because it pays us more, and we never let affiliate partnerships influence our calculator results or editorial opinions.
How it works
When you click an affiliate link on Knowwatt, you're taken to the provider's website with a small tracking code in the URL. This tells the provider that you came from us. If you make a purchase or sign up within a set window (usually 7–30 days), the provider pays us a commission. The tracking is handled by our affiliate network, Awin.
We don't receive any of your personal data through this process. We can see that a conversion happened, but not who you are or what you bought.
What we will never do
- Recommend a product because it pays a higher commission
- Alter calculator results to favour an affiliate partner
- Present advertising as editorial content without clear labelling
- Sell your data to anyone, for any reason
- Accept payment to write favourable reviews or guides
How we label affiliate links
Every affiliate link on this site is marked. You'll see either "Ad · affiliate link" near a call-to-action button, or a "sponsored" attribute in the link itself. If a link earns us money, we tell you. If it doesn't, we don't pretend it does.

Home battery storage systems and solar products. We link to EcoFlow from our battery payback calculator, battery storage guide, and solar + heat pump guide. Commission: percentage of sale. Cookie window: 7 days.
LeadsDoWork
Insulation installer matching service. When you submit the quote request form on our insulation calculator, your details are passed to LeadsDoWork, who connect you with up to 4 local insulation installers. We earn a commission per submitted enquiry. Your details are shared with the matched installers only.
Why affiliate links, not ads?
Display advertising (banners, pop-ups, auto-play video) pays per impression — the more pages you load, the more we'd earn. That creates an incentive to spread content thin across as many pages as possible, slow your experience with heavy ad scripts, and prioritise pageviews over usefulness.
Affiliate links align our incentives with yours. We earn money only when you find a product genuinely useful enough to buy. If our calculators are inaccurate or our guides are unhelpful, you won't click through and we won't earn anything. That keeps us honest.
