Plug-in solar panels UK: what you can legally install, what it costs, and whether it's worth it

On 27 August 2026, two statutory instruments came into force and, for the first time, a solar panel plugged into a standard UK wall socket became legal. Here's what the rules actually say, what the numbers look like, and who should — and shouldn't — buy one.

The short version: compliant plug-in solar kits (up to 800W) are now legal in England, Wales, and Scotland. A typical kit costs £400–£800, generates 500–800 kWh/year, and saves £70–£200/year depending on orientation and how much electricity you use during daylight hours. Payback: 3–6 years. No electrician needed, but you must notify your DNO. One system per household. Best suited to renters, flat owners, and anyone without roof access. If you own your home and have a suitable roof, a full rooftop installation remains far better value.

What changed on 27 August

Before this date, connecting any electricity-generating device to a standard UK socket was specifically prohibited by the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994. A solar panel plugged into a wall socket was not unregulated — it was illegal.

SI 2026/848 amended those regulations to create a new legal category: the "plug-in microgenerator." A product certified against the government's Interim Product Specification v2 (IPS v2) can now be legally sold, self-installed, and connected via a standard BS 1363 13A socket by the homeowner. No electrician required.

Separately, SI 2026/896 updated planning rules in England so that plug-in solar panels benefit from permitted development rights, meaning no planning permission is needed in most cases.

Where you can and can't install

The physical restrictions are important and easy to overlook:

If you're renting, the panels themselves don't need landlord permission — the socket connection is yours to use. But any physical attachment to the building's structure (brackets, screws, clamps) does.

What it costs

Government analysis puts the central cost range at £400–£600 for a typical 800W kit. Real-world retail prices vary:

Realistic savings

This is where the marketing and the reality diverge. The savings depend entirely on three factors: how much your panels generate, how much of that generation you use directly (self-consumption), and what you'd otherwise pay for that electricity from the grid.

Generation: an 800W system generates roughly 650–800 kWh/year in southern England with south-facing panels at a 30–35° tilt. In northern England or Scotland, expect 500–650 kWh. East or west-facing panels, or near-vertical balcony mounting, drops output to 400–500 kWh.

Self-consumption: this is the critical number. Plug-in solar feeds power into your home in real time — there's no battery and no export payment. If you're generating electricity and nobody's using it, that power is effectively given away to the grid for free. Realistic self-consumption without a battery is 25–50%, depending on whether someone is home during the day.

The maths: at the current price cap rate of around 26p/kWh:

Government estimates land at £70–£110/year. More optimistic figures of £150–£200 typically assume near-perfect south-facing orientation and high self-consumption — achievable, but not the default.

The pitfalls most coverage doesn't mention

The headlines make plug-in solar sound effortless. Mostly it is — but there are a few things worth knowing:

1. Not all kits are certified. A product being on sale in the UK does not mean it meets IPS v2. The law changed, but the certification pipeline is still catching up. Several kits currently available include batteries (which aren't covered by the current rules) or haven't completed the approval process. An uncertified system connected to your home could invalidate your home insurance if it causes a fault.

2. The 3.68 kW limit is cumulative. If you already have rooftop solar, the UK's simple-connect limit of 3.68 kW applies per property, not per system. Adding an 800W plug-in kit to a home with an existing 3.5 kW rooftop array pushes your total to 4.3 kW — over the limit, which means a formal G99 application to your DNO. This can take weeks and may be refused.

3. No export payment. Plug-in systems are not metered for export. Any electricity you generate but don't use instantly is fed to the grid for free. There is no SEG (Smart Export Guarantee) payment. This is the single biggest difference between plug-in solar and a proper rooftop installation.

4. Balcony orientation matters more than you'd think. A south-facing balcony at 35° tilt is ideal but rare. Most balcony installations are near-vertical (85–90°), which cuts output by 25–35%. East or west-facing drops it further. The £200/year savings figures assume ideal conditions that most balconies don't have.

5. Wind loading on balconies. Panels mounted on a balcony railing are exposed to wind in ways that rooftop panels aren't. Cheap mounting hardware can fail in strong gusts. Use the manufacturer's approved mounting kit, and check your building's wind exposure class if you're above the third floor.

How to maximise your return

Shift your usage to daylight hours. Run your washing machine, dishwasher, and tumble dryer during the day when your panels are generating. This can lift self-consumption from 30% to 60–70% — doubling your effective saving. Smart plugs and timer switches help automate this.

Get the orientation right. If you have a choice between mounting locations, south-facing at a tilt beats vertical every time. A ground-mounted panel in a south-facing garden will outperform a vertical panel on a west-facing balcony by 40–60%.

What's coming next

Plug-in batteries. The government excluded battery storage from the August 2026 legislation, but it's expected to follow within 6–12 months.
